Comanche Creek Workshop

I spent my weekend (after the Obama rally) at Comanche Creek in Carson National Forest--New Mexico. The workshop was focused on restoring a tributary of Comanche Creek. The property was once owned by Pennzoil company.  There are several abandoned hunting lodges that they used to bring CEOs and other potential business partners out to in the old days.  These lodges are HUGE...

The area was also heavily mined (gold) and cut for timber.  When Pennzoil donated the land to the Forest Service it was rested for a number of years before allowing grazing.  Since the 80s the Forest Service has been working to restore Comanche Creek area through partnerships with non-profits and other organizations.  Quivira (the folks who sponsor my apprenticeship) have been helping out at Comanche Creek for many years now and all of their work has been done through volunteer work groups.

I spent both of my work days helping with surveying points.  Creating monitoring points for the future and also resurveying some areas that were setup five years ago.
