Trees Trees Trees

We are down to about 500 trees to plant, mainly apples are left. What is not included in our grand count are the newly grafted trees that we worked on last month.  These new grafts have to push-bud before we up pot them into ten inch by 3 inch pots.  The newly potted grafts will be planted in cultivated beds in June.  Another type of tree we have not include in this counts are the trees that need to be up-potted to new bags because they were not sold this past season.

Have you ever heard of the Giant Russian Apple variety?  This apple is not particularly tasty fresh, but great for baking with because it is fairly dry and has high tannic acid levels ( I believe it is tannic acid). The flesh of this apple is streaked with red most of the time too, which adds red to any pies.  The leaves of the tree are burgundy red to deep purple, which makes it an odd duck in an orchard.

Today I helped plant in the vegetable garden.  I'm looking forward to basil, peppers, and lots of lettuce, plus more to come.

The blue things are walls-o-water, which are very common in many western gardens because they help insulate plants from extreme temperatures, in both directions.
