It came! For about 20 minutes.
Blurry picture but that's the rain on the window. SLV gets about 7 inches of rain each year, but the last couple years have been drought. They haven't seen rain at the ranch in a year. Hopefully La Nina is ending and some normal weather will hit us.
I spent the rest of my day in the garden and in the field with some calves. We had some issues with two calves today. One was an older calf, but he would not nurse his mother and was scavenging off other mothers.
The other calf had a hard start in this world. The heifer did not apparently start licking off her face before licking her belly. The placenta was still over her head and we discovered her a little while later. She wasn't breathing well and seems to have some potential brain damage. She did not know how to get up and her mother gave up trying to nudge her up. We worked on her and was able to teach her to stand. Once she could stand we discovered that her mother did not want her to nurse. Frustrating!
We transported the calf to the corral and the mother followed. We were able to tie one of the mother's back legs up and allow the calf to nurse. We are glad this little calf is doing better and hope the lack of oxygen does not interfere anymore.
