Calving

Watching a cow have a calf is beautiful.  Today I went out for afternoon checks and found a springy little heifer calf running around her mother's legs.  This was not the only calf about to emerge on this earth.  I walked a little ways through the herd and found my 819 having her calf.  She was at last fully bagged up this morning and her vulva extremely loose, I was hoping she could calve soon.  Her water broke as I walked up to her.  She was not too excited about having me present for her calf's birth, but I stuck around to make sure it presented correctly as it eased out of her.  The little heifer was born within 45 minutes of her water breaking.  I've checked on both calves tonight and they look set for the night.  It is a relief to have some healthy calves on the ground.

I did have a video clip of 819s birthing, but I can't seem to get Blogger to upload it.  I know several of you have asked about what it is like to watch births.
