One Week, First Week

(This morning's sunrise plus Nelli)

Tonight I feel compelled to think about all that I have learned in my first week of being on the ranch. I do not know if I feel like listing them (suspect you would rather not read it), but nonetheless farming/ranching lends itself, almost constantly, to learning and experimenting for those who seek it. Who knows if the current land management path is the right one that will lead to true sustainability, but at the moment (2-5 years up the road) it seems like it fulfills our image. Now, this image/picture is also evolving. The more we learn about the soil beneath our feet, the complexity of aquatic systems, and the air we breathe-- the picture shifts. I look forward to grappling with the big questions that face this ranch and valley in the coming year, and along with this my role in cultivating a productive and caring food system.

I’ve also only begun to understand what I do not know.
